The Truth About Me
Behind the Mirror | Ophelia has often been described as beautiful, but she has never seen herself as such. She has long, pale blonde hair that cascades down to her mid-back in relaxed ringlets, long side bangs sweeping over her eyes to shade them lightly. She has a heart shaped face with pale, lush lips and thick, dark lashes; however, the most stunning facture of her face is her ice blue eyes that seem to glow beneath her lashes. Her skin is extremely pale, almost sickly which has led her to be called a porcelain doll by how delicate it makes her appear, and her skinny figure has not helped in that accusation. She stands about five foot seven, a considerable height considering her weight. Her body is extremely thin, some of her bones sticking out against her ribs and hips, but there is nothing she can do about it due to the lack of food available to her.
Her usual clothing when she is on the streets consists of a pair of tight black cotton pants which both keep her warm and help her avoid getting caught in the machinery in the factories. This is often complimented with a v-neck shirt of various colors and a dark teal jacket that her brother brought home for her one cold winter night. It is not much, but she feels that it is one of the most beneficial items in keeping her from freezing to death.
Personality | Ophelia is one of those girls that is highly unpredictable; you never know what side of her you will see. Her first side is the one she normally expresses to people, the one where she is fun and playful, simply wanting to have a good time. Her other side is the one that no one wants to encounter. She can be a complete sarcastic bitch when someone pisses her off or she simply doesn’t like their attitude, one of her worst traits; sometimes she can even be a little psychotic. It is rare that she is ever seen vulnerable so when someone does see her completely broken down, it is almost impossible to build her back up to where she once was.
Ophelia loves to dance, though she never received any sort of formal training from anyone, only watching the fabulous Capitol ballet dancers strut and flutter across the stage on the television programs that they were sometimes permitted to watch. Her flexibility has allowed her to mimic many of the extreme moves that the well trained females can do, but she is nowhere near as graceful as those who have been trained since birth. Another thing that she has always liked was helping others in need whether it be the old woman with her groceries as she walks home or the small children that run about the streets when their parents are away at work. This is one of the reasons that she so often takes care of the children in her district without even worrying if she gets paid, only wanting to be helpful to them. There has never been anything that she could honestly say she disliked besides the Reaping and Hunger Games, but if she had to name something it would be rude people who do not care for the others around them..
My Haunting Memories
Ophelia Lilith Hawthorne was born to Joshua and Elizabeth Hawthorne in District Three, one of the higher up yet more rebellious districts. What did not play into the Hawthorne family's favor though was that they were an extremely poor family much like the rest of the inhabitance of the district and the prospects for their children looked bleak. However, even with these sad odds in their favor, Ophelia's parents never let this dissuade them from giving their children a wonderful life. With little to no wealth the two parents worked hard to educate Ophelia and her older brother Gabriel with their own knowledge whenever they were not working because they could not afford to send their children to the school all the way across the district, and when they were forced to go and work Gabriel would teach his younger sister what he knew so she would never fall behind; they all believed that education would help them to gain a better life in the end.
The cycle of playing outside and learning was a constant in the children's lives and neither of them had a word of complaint, but when Ophelia turned six both children were forced to come and work in one of the factories of District Three where the smaller children were trained for the work that was to come with little to no pay. This was where Ophelia was taught her most important training though, the training on how to survive the Hunger Games. Her brother was rather cunning and intelligent for an eleven year old boy and at the time he had seen the Hunger Games take place on more than one occasion, watching the blood battles that ripped families apart in a way that gave him nightmares for weeks on end. He fully understood what the future held for himself and his sister if they were to be picked in the Reaping as tributes and this was something he did not want to stumble across. With the knowledge of what would happen in the Hunger Games to the innocent child who he loved so much, he began using whatever he could get his hands on to educate Ophelia in close combat, focusing mainly on a type of dagger close combat that would surely play out as an advantage.
It was not until Ophelia was eleven that her older brother Gabriel taught her why he had been teaching her how to fight with various items in the form of hand-to-hand combat, telling her that the next year she may have to apply her skills in combat if she were to be chosen for the Hunger Games. The thought of being ripped away from her family and possibly never seeing them again terrified the young girl and she begged her brother to teach her his knowledge of how to stay alive on the course, though it did not take him long to agree at all; he taught her everything he knew in the hopes that she would have to use that knowledge in the bloodied battle. However, Ophelia knew that her beloved brother could not teach her everything so she did her best to train herself when her brother was busy, her work in the factories only aiding her in this as it made her more limber and agile from climbing into small places under the machinery that the adults could not reach.
When the young girl was only fourteen her mother and father were both killed in one of the most covered up accidents of District Three, a large factory crane malfunctioning in a train repair shop and ending their lives. The metal object had jammed when it was turning, the weight throwing the entire thing off balance and sending it crashing down on both the Hawthorne parents and three other workers; they were all killed instantly, but to the Capitol the most horrid tragedy was the fact that work was delayed for the next two days. The Capitol was not pleased with this incident at all and kept it quiet mainly to hush any rebellions that could have been stirring in the rebellious area, leaving the two Hawthorne siblings to fend for themselves in the middle of the winter. They had little to no money and food was scares during the winter season, but Gabriel did his best to bring in money to support them both by working double shifts in the factories and Ophelia pitched in as well by taking various child care jobs all around the district while her brother was away at work. This was the method in which they lived for the next few years until one day Gabriel went to the bakery just down the street where he met a girl named Evangeline and instantly fell head over heels in love. The two quickly had a relationship that blossomed into complete devotion and love and one spring morning Gabriel proposed to the woman who eagerly said yes.
Now Ophelia's life has begun to take a positive shift out of the darkness and into the light, something that she thought she would never see. The whispers of rebellion have begun to grow quieter with each passing day in the unhappy rebellion as pay wages have begun to rise. The two have saved up just enough money for Evangeline to move into their house and start planning for a future, though her and Gabriel do not wish to marry just yet because they want to wait until Ophelia turns nineteen, a splendid age for them that makes joy bubble inside their hearts. There is only one problem that plagues Ophelia's mind day and night and that is the Reaping that is to come for her eighteenth year on this planet, the event that haunts her brother and his fiancé as well. She so desperately wants to watch her brother get married and have children, but deep down she knows that an underfed female with no real training would have no chance against the wolves that she would be thrown against, wolves that have been training for this evidence all their lives. The wolves would destroy her without a second thought and that is the thought that gives her nightmares.
I’m Lethal When Provoked
Physical Skills | For being a tiny female Ophelia has a surprising number of physical skills, though she rarely shows them unless she is provoked. She is extremely skilled in evasion tactics due to her work in the factories and having to maneuver under the large machinery and every day she practices these skills when she goes to work. Her most notable skill though is her ability with knives and daggers, something that is quite unheard of in District Three. She is able to throw them with deadly accuracy and is a master at wielding them in close combat situations because of all her training with her older brother. Working with him of all people has also taught her how to take out a man that is much larger than her with ease; without her brother she knows that she would probably fall easily to any male who was a little larger than her because of how physically weak she is.
Physical Weaknesses | Ophelia is extremely underfed and malnourished due to the lack of food in her district, giving her a severe disadvantage since she is so sickly. This also plays against her stamina because she cannot last as long as most people would be able to in any type of physical activity, though she would do just find in hand-to-hand combat because she has been training for it the majority of her life.
Mental Skills | Her main mental skill is her intelligence, something that comes naturally to her because she lives inside of District Three. She knows how to rewire explosives and ridge them to explode at a certain time, though most would consider this to be a basic skill. However her intelligence is one that surpasses many of the people of her district because she has been trained in various survival skills by her brother which would give her a slight advantage over those who have not been trained prior to being named a tribute.
Mental Weaknesses | Like most of the children from District Three, Ophelia is not mentally prepared for the horrors of the Hunger Games and seeing them first hand would be extremely detrimental to her health. The thought of having to watch dozens of people die let alone slaughter them makes her want to faint, but she knows that if she were to be chosen for the Hunger Games this is a task she would ultimately have to deal with whether she wanted to or not.
My Own Personal Hell
My District | District Three is horrible place to live because of the lack of food and shelter for all its inhabitance, the refusal of the Capitol to help only making it worse. So many people die during the horrible winters that it has become a population problem and she fears that if the government does not step in soon District Three may have little to no people left within it.
The Hunger Games | The Hunger Games, much like the Reaping, is a part of life. There is no avoiding it because it must come for life to continue as it should. She has come to respect all those who fight in the Hunger Games though despite how they are portrayed because each and every person has fought their hardest to make it out alive. However she still finds ti to be a horrid event that she wished nobody would ever have to go through.
