The Capitol's Dirty Little Secret

The 59th Hunger Games are one of the most memorable Hunger Games in the history of Panem for one reason; the story of a single tribute named Shiru Min. Shiru Min was a fourteen year old boy from District Nine that was chosen as the tribute in the Reaping and then swept off to his doom, his last image of his home being the sad face of the little girl who he had fallen in love with over the years. Nikita Tien still remembers his face that mirrored his own as he pulled away in the train, the feeling of his lips against her own still burning as she prayed to whatever God allowed her to live that he would come home to her safe and sound.

As the Hunger Games fast approached and the interviews on the television progressed, the Capitol slowly drew out a piece of information that they would play up that year, the knowledge that the fourteen year old boy was in love and that his best friend was waiting for him to return. It became the talk of the country, the hopeful love story that everyone wanted to see flourish into a tangible thing one day. During the Hunger Games the Capitol kept sure to keep close tabs on him, playing up his story as much as they could until it came to a tragic end. Only three days before the final events of the 59th Hunger Games a District Two boy cornered him, his weapon raised as he went to end the child’s life; it was said that his death was far too gruesome to even play on the television, the murder of an innocent child who only wanted to see his best friend. Every night since that unfortunate day Nikita has had to watch Shiru die before her eyes, his death far too horrid to even fathom yet never leaving her dreams.

Everyone assumed that Shiru Min died that day in the Hunger Games, but what if had not? What if the whole story was fantasy? As much as President Alexandria and the Capitol will deny it, this is the truth; Shiru Min was pulled from the arena a bloody mess, his body mangled and his soul dying, but something told them that he had to survive and they permitted him to do just that.

It has been thirteen years since his tragic accident in the Hunger Games, thirteen long years since he has been able to hold his best friend in his arms and tell her that he could not wait to see her. He watched her compete on the televisions during the 61st Hunger Games and hoped with every fiber of his being that she would survive and do the one thing that he could not do and when she did, hope bubbled up within his chest. Every year he watches her skate through the grounds of the Capitol, her eyes void of all emotions as she plays the part of the prestigious mentor that he knows she always had the potential to be. There is only one catch to this game though, one rule that he must always follow because of the blessing the Capitol bestowed upon him. In return for being allowed to live he must never speak nor communicate with a person that he knows, his body forced to fill the role of an Avox though he was allowed to keep his tongue. Every year his resolve breaks down a little more though and this year may just be the year where he sneaks up to her bedside and confuses that he has been by her side the entire time.
